Miley…Seriously? Heavy Sigh.

Jun
11

OK – I avoided it for a month. Sort of how you avoid going to the dentist when you have a toothache…because you know it’s gonna hurt.

I am a Southern girl, raised with Southern values (and quirks) by parents who love me dearly. When the whole Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana craze started I liked the fact that she was sharing good old fashioned Southern values (and quirks) with the world. The show was light hearted, fun, and spoke some decent life lessons into the throngs of tweens and teens that were watching. It also went a long way to help those not from the South ”get us” more. Yeah, we might be quirky…but we enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Now, due to the events of the last month I shouldn’t use the word pleasure and Miley in the same sentence because it takes on a whole new connotation. There are new flashes of images that run through my head when I think of Miley because of the space she has now placed herself in – and it is not a space a sweet Southern girl should aspire to fill.

Are you serious? Miley…have you lost your mind? Billy Ray – is this really what you wanted for your daughter? Tish…she’s your little girl, for goodness sakes. It is reported you were there on the set of that music video and you watched the whole tawdry thing play out before your mom eyes…and allowed it? How? Why?

Say it ain’t so. (Southern slang intended!)

I had heard so much about it, and my fellow momblogger (over on MomLifeToday) Dannah Gresh has taken a bold stand to speak out on it, so I felt it was time for me to see for myself just how much Miley has conformed to the world.

Last night, while my own teens were sleeping silently in their beds I found the music video on the internet and forced myself to watch it. I sat drop jawed as I witnessed the death of innocence…that will lead to the death of more innocence. Many pair of little eyes watch and immulate Miley/Hannah and realizing what they could very well be exposed to…frightening… and heart breaking.

Miley claims to be a Christian, but it seems apparent she has not spent much time lately listening to guidance from the Holy Spirit. I can relate to that, we all can, the further away we get from God the more the world drowns out the sound of His voice and that’s when we falter.

It has also made me all the more determined to encourage moms to be bold in speaking into the lives of their children and not backing down when it comes to the temptations and lure of the world.

We need to all be reminded of a very specific truth found in God’s word.

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Prayer Happens

May
6

I was sitting in a restaurant and at the table next to me I saw a family with their heads bowed blessing their food before they ate.

I was substitute teaching at school and I saw a couple of teachers gathered together in a corner praying.

I was on an airplane and I saw a passenger in front of me praying earnestly before the plane took off.

Today is the National Day of Prayer and there are people who have gathered all across this great free nation to bow their heads in prayer. Prayer is a right and a privilege of all Americans.

Have you prayed today? It is a habit that you should repeat daily.

Orphan Care Summit

Apr
29

Do you care about orphans?

If so, you would be interested in knowing that at this very moment a group of 1,100 key leaders are gathered together at the annual Orphan Care Summit and these Saints are finding ways to work together to care for the needs of the 140 million orphans in the world. Arm in arm they are seeking solutions for “the least of these.” And as Dennis Rainey likes to say, “they are leaving their logos and egos at the door” in their quest for providing help and hope for the world’s orphans.

I have had the privilege of attending this event the last three years, but this year several “mom duties” prevented me from attending. The energy, the hope and the heart of the people there is contagious.  I miss being there!

Interestingly, six years ago the first Orphan Care Summit was held because one man was compelled to share his heart for the orphan with others…there were a mere 38 attendees. From one man, to a gathering of 38 and now 1,100. Isn’t that just like God to start a movement with a small group of people who will listen to His heart and act.

Do you take time out of your busyness to listen to what God might have for you?

I challenge you to be still and listen, because He chooses regular people to make great things happen.

Mom Bully Exposed

Apr
28

Did you catch this story today on Good Morning America…about cyber mom bullies?

OK, so I suppose part of blogging, tweeting and facebook is to share your opinions and thoughts on what you see going on in the world around you, but ugly personal attacks against people is just plain wrong.

Just because you cannot see the pain in their eyes, does not mean that your words did not put it there.

We all need to be mindful to use social media to inform and uplift, not criticize and tear down. May I suggest that’s what “delete” and “unfriend” are for – when you see “ugly” remove it from your field of vision. And I am not talking about appearances…but I’m guessing you realize that.

My mom gave me the best advice on this subject when I was very young, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”

A good motto for us all to live by as we let our fingers slide over the keyboard!

Photoshop Sucks

Apr
22

I just watched this video and it made me want to scream!

Photoshop sucks… the pounds, wrinkles, sun spots, blemishes and natural curves, right off of your body.

At what cost?

The women who view magazine photos are daily being made to feel “less than” because they do not measure up to the women in the photographs. Hey, the women in the photographs don’t measure up to the women in the photographs. Because the photos are NOT REAL.

More importantly we are not designed to measure up to each other. We are designed to be individuals, unique with each bump, bulge, blemish and scar being part of who we are.

The young woman in this video is absolutely beautiful by the “world’s standards” and even she was made to feel that her face and body were not perfectly sculpted.  You could see her squirming and feeling uncomfortable and not “good enough” while she was being photoshopped. Ironic that she was simply trying to bring attention to this issue through knowingly setting herself up for scrutiny and it was even effecting her perception of herself!

This is what we all face daily through media images! But it is especially hard for teens.
This just makes me sad.  And mad.  Please teach your children, and especially your teens, to be comfortable in their own skin and NOT to feel the pressure to be just like everyone else.

Grrrrrr.

Surrender Your Shoes – for Kids w/out Shoes

Apr
8

This is one of those moments when I wish I had TONS of moms reading my blog…because I want all moms out there to join me in sharing a very practical teaching moment with their children.

Have you ever stopped to think of the number of children around the world who spend every day of their lives barefoot?  At first glance you may think that’s sad, but it’s more than sad…it leaves them vulnerable to disease and injury.  Toms Shoes is asking YOU to go barefoot tomorrow in honor of those tiny heels, arches and toes that wander dirt roads and city streets unprotected.

I hope you are familiar with Toms Shoes – they are a great organization and since their inception they have given over 600,000 pair of shoes away.  How do they do that?  For every pair of shoes you buy from them, they give a pair of shoes to a child.  That is a company we should all want to support by spending our hard earned money with them!

This is your chance mom…teach your children about other children less fortunate than them with a very hands-on practical lesson and go ONE DAY WITHOUT SHOES!

Tiger and His Tale

Feb
19

Did you watch the news conference today?

There stood a somber, serious, wearied looking Tiger Woods trying to help a judgmental world understand his regret and pain.

There stood a deeply concerned husband and father pleading with the mass of reporters and curious onlookers to leave his family alone.

There stood a product endorsing gold mine trying to salvage his name and career.

There stood a sinner who’s ugly sin was exposed to the world.

No matter your take on who he “really” is or his motives, his sincerity or his future…

…remember what Jesus said to the judging crowd murmuring before the adulterous woman…

“If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone…” John 8:7

The writing’s on the wall…uh, hand

Feb
9

So, I am speaking as a mom, not as a political analyst – because…I am a mom, not a political analyst. And this post is not about politics, it’s about momness.

Reporters have been giving Sarah Palin a hard time because of the notes she wrote on her hand at a recent event where she was speaking.  Are you serious? Years ago I had a friend who was a nurse teach me that one. That’s the smartest trick in the book (or should I say “handbook” - har, har!)  for a multitasking mom!

At any one given moment an involved mom has more things on her mind as a multi-tasking mom than most reporters have on their mind for an entire day! And anyway, a reporter has that nifty little notebook they carry around to make notes on.  Not to mention their handheld electronic device that they use as a brain so they don’t have to remember every detail of their little reporter lives.

Well, as a mom I don’t have time to stop and get a piece of paper to write something on…epsecially since I’d just loose it, or use it to wipe a nose with or some such nonsense! And don’t even get me started on the fact that unlike a reporter who only has to keep up with his own litte life details, as a mom…I have to keep up with every member of my families life details. Do you know how much that is to remember?

Now granted I’m no Sarah Palin…but I’m guessing when that lady is on the road, about to make a speech, or about to be interviewed she still has the following things about her family running through her mind:

Did I get enough groceries for meals?
Do they remember practice is tonight?
I did tell him what time she has to be there, didn’t I?
Are there extra diapers in the closet?
She needs that dressed hemmed, who’s gonna do that?
Did that science project get completed?
Uh oh, registration for camp is due this week.
Oh no, she has to have her permission slip signed by the a.m.
etc…

So hey – all you pesky little reporters who are so easy to “trash talk” Sarah Palin…just remember there are an awful lot of us moms out here who do the same “dumb” things as she does because we live for more than ourselves…we live for our families. Trust me, that does not make us “less” of a person…it makes us “more” of one!

Back off and give a mom the benefit of the doubt for once – after all everyone knows being a mom is the hardest and most important job in the world! Yes, even more important than being a reporter!

Surrogates Movie…CreepyTrue

Feb
4

So, have you seen the movie Surrogates? (Warning: It is a little risque, if you are sensitive to such things!)

Hubby and I rented it and I must say, it creeped me out! Mainly because it seemed to mimic what’s already happening in America today! All the “perfect” people who wanted to look their very best – it was like looking at all the botox faces in Hollywood!

But it seemed to go deeper than that…as I reflected on all the faces I pass every day I thought of how many of us wear our “masks” and pretend all is well. We strive to look good on the outside to shield the world from the pain we have on the inside. Add to that the fact that more and more people are creating the facade of themselves they want to portray through blogs, facebook, twittering…and we may just be heading towards a world of surrogate selves!

More and more we are existing in a society where we can hide who we really are and present ourselves to the world in the way we wish we were.

I don’t have all the answers…I just know what I saw portrayed in the movie Surrogates seems to be happening and that is creepy true to me!

What do you think?

Haiti Up Close & Personal

Feb
4

Hey friends – this morning at FamilyLife we heard from the Executive Director of our Hope for Orphans ministry…and I cried through most of his presentation!

He recently got back from Haiti where he took a group of doctors to care for orphans and to sort through paper work in an effort to find “forever families” for orphans.

We saw the faces and heard the voices of the children of Haiti…

He shared with us that there were over 300,000 orphans in Haiti before the earthquake…it is yet to be determined how large that number will now grow.

I would like to invite you to learn more about what we are doing in Haiti and how you can help by visiting the Hope for Orphans blog site.
