Cliff Jumping Mom!

Aug
26

Don’t you just love spending nice quiet fun weekends with your family?

Yeah, me too.

Well…sometimes ya just gotta spend a wild and crazy fun weekend with your family!

This past weekend I think I may have exceeded the definition of wild and crazy fun…have you ever been cliff jumping? It is quite fun – I wrote a post last year about my initial cliff jumping adventure and that left a few people thinking I had lost my mind!

This year we tricked…convinced…uh, I mean invited five other families to join us – and picked up a few extra kids along the way! A good time was had by all – we were there for over six hours.

Interestingly, I think they got hooked - plans are already being made for another day of exhilarating cliff jumping fun!

Woo hoo!  Look out below…

Family Reunion

Jul
28

Time marches on.

For me that was easily and eerily obvious this past weekend when I gathered with extended family at a family reunion.

How in the world can “cute little Jackson” be the father of an 18 month old? It literally blew my mind to see him chasing that little guy around the yard. Him a father…really? Wasn’t it just a couple years ago that he was bragging about finally being able to drive? Obviously it was more than a couple years ago!

Then there’s that accompanying nagging thought, “Dang, I must be gettin old!” Say it ain’t so!

I must admit, with each passing year of my life I do enjoy the “I honestly do not give a rip what other people think about me” freedom that coincides with the aging process.

Allow me to provide you with some “age old wisdom” {groaning as I type those words} even if you do not yet consider yourself ”aging” such as I do…go ahead and start “not giving a rip” now…it will save you a whole big bunch of needless fretting. And it will make life more fun!

Come to think of it…that’s why an 18 month old runs around in a yard…he doesn’t give a rip and he wants to have fun!

So, right now, blow your child’s mind and join me in a little new found freedom and have some rip roarin fun -  meander outside and run around in the yard for no apparent reason!

Va-ca-tion!

Long weekends….aaahhh!

My son on his dirt bike jumping the giant dirt jumps his Dad created for him with a rented back hoe!

My daughter in the back field riding her horse at a full gallop…smile broad and heart full!

My parents on a four wheeler…Mom giggling and looking like a teenager!

Hubby doing yet another project to improve our outdoor oasis!

Fireworks ooohhs and aaahhs and my son directing the entire process!

My daughter barrel racing at the local rodeo!

Yummy eats enjoyed with family and friends!

Marathon card playing and friendly chiding around the game table!

Long conversations on the back deck!

A 5:00 a.m. hike up a mountain that included watching the sun rise!

Some weekends you want to last forever…this past weekend was one of those!

Life is good.

Wipe Out Laughter

Jun

Are there male people in your home?

So, tell me…are they ridiculously addicted to the television program Wipe Out?

wipeout

I have two male people in my home – a hubby and a 14 year old. I’m not sure which one is the teen when the two of them get their weekly “fix” of watching people being battered, flung about and humiliated while throwing their flailing bodies through the craziest assortment of obstacle courses you have ever had the misfortune of observing. (Wow, what a sentence!)

I find that I have to watch it with them just because I so enjoy the two of them reacting, laughing, clapping and basically revelling in the pain and disgraceful smack down of other humans. During this program our Tivo rewind gets worn the heck out!

I am known for throwing some seriously awesome parties…so if you can keep a secret…I am cooking up a good one that results in those two fellas (and some select friends I’d like to see messy) getting some of their own slippery, muddy, yucky obstacles to slip and slide through.  Oh yeah…they will be experiencing some Wipe Out fun of their own! On a much smaller scale…obviously!

Anyone have any good “homemade” obstacle course Wipe Out ideas?  Please, do share…

Loss, Love and a Sweet Little Girl

Jun
23

I just got back from a funeral.

Death stinks.

Thankfully, for “Uncle Ick” (as my children have always referred to him) death means the ushering in of eternal life, freedom from pain and discarding the cane he has had to walk with for two decades due to a debilitating injury.

But for those of us left behind…the fact remains, death stinks.

Looking into the eyes of his wife of 29 years, (my hubby’s sister) and seeing pain, loss, confusion and real sadness left me with a deep longing for her pain to subside. But I know grieving is a process and fully feeling loss is part of that process.

The brightest spot of the days of togetherness and mourning came in the form of a sweet seven year old family member. It was my daughter who pointed out to me the special influence she was having on people at the funeral and those that gathered before and after.

She seemed to be inexplicably drawn to those who were in a moment of intense grief, like a moth to flame. She would silently appear by their side, wrap her small arms around the mourning soul and offer a soft lingering hug. After a few silent moments of compassion she would softly slip away – drawn to a new flickering flame that was struggling with the angst of grief.

It was a beautiful picture of God’s pursuit of man and His desire to shower them with compassion and love – especially when they are hurting. It was as if we each felt Gods loving embrace of comfort through the tiny frail arms of a sweet little girl.

It was also a picture of how He desires to use us in the lives of others. If only we could all offer His love so freely to those around us who are hurting.

Happy Mother’s Day Cow…say what?

May
7

Normally if you put the words “Mother’s Day” and “cow” in the same sentence you might get a kick in the shins from the female you uttered those words to! (OK, the “utter” was bad, but I couldn’t resist!)

However, this Mother’s Day cow is an inspired idea brought to us from Heifer International. If you have never heard of Heifer…well, you need to know about them. It is an organization that allows you to purchase livestock to be given to moms, dads and families in developing countries so that they may have means to provide for their families and contribute to their communities.

I am guessing you do not need another night gown, flower bouquet or manicure gift card - but that mom over in Rwanda who is struggling to provide for her family sure could use a cow to improve the quality of her life.

And hey, if your family budget cannot spring for a cow there are many other less pricey choices from chicks to bunnies. Now that’s something your children could get real excited about giving on Mother’s Day. And in the process you are teaching them to care about others and honor those they love with a gift that provides real help to those in need.

Get mooooving and go check out Heifer International now! (I just couldn’t help myself!)

Orphan Care Summit

Apr
29

Do you care about orphans?

If so, you would be interested in knowing that at this very moment a group of 1,100 key leaders are gathered together at the annual Orphan Care Summit and these Saints are finding ways to work together to care for the needs of the 140 million orphans in the world. Arm in arm they are seeking solutions for “the least of these.” And as Dennis Rainey likes to say, “they are leaving their logos and egos at the door” in their quest for providing help and hope for the world’s orphans.

I have had the privilege of attending this event the last three years, but this year several “mom duties” prevented me from attending. The energy, the hope and the heart of the people there is contagious.  I miss being there!

Interestingly, six years ago the first Orphan Care Summit was held because one man was compelled to share his heart for the orphan with others…there were a mere 38 attendees. From one man, to a gathering of 38 and now 1,100. Isn’t that just like God to start a movement with a small group of people who will listen to His heart and act.

Do you take time out of your busyness to listen to what God might have for you?

I challenge you to be still and listen, because He chooses regular people to make great things happen.

TV Family Movie Night is Back

Apr
13

OK friends, this Friday may just be the “re-start” of something great! Years ago Friday nights used to be “Family Movie Night” on network television. However, as we can all attest to, settling down with your family in front of the TV these days requires speed and accuracy with the remote. You know what I’m talking about, all of us have become professionals in our ability to mute and even push the off button in the blink of an eye!

The jury is out, since this Friday is opening night of NBC’s new endeavor, but I have it on good authority that advertisers out there realize that moms are fed up with the choices on network television and a few of them got together and decided to give family friendly TV an attempt.

So yes, we will be making some homemade pizza, popping some popcorn and baking some cookies as we gather around the TV and see if we can be “safely” entertained without being offended by content or trashy commercials.

Now, if you plan on joining in on the fun…don’t blame me if it all turns out bad, do not shoot the messenger. I’m just here to inform. If you do check it out, come back afterwards and leave a comment and then maybe we can decide together what the general consensus is!

Surrender Your Shoes – for Kids w/out Shoes

Apr
8

This is one of those moments when I wish I had TONS of moms reading my blog…because I want all moms out there to join me in sharing a very practical teaching moment with their children.

Have you ever stopped to think of the number of children around the world who spend every day of their lives barefoot?  At first glance you may think that’s sad, but it’s more than sad…it leaves them vulnerable to disease and injury.  Toms Shoes is asking YOU to go barefoot tomorrow in honor of those tiny heels, arches and toes that wander dirt roads and city streets unprotected.

I hope you are familiar with Toms Shoes – they are a great organization and since their inception they have given over 600,000 pair of shoes away.  How do they do that?  For every pair of shoes you buy from them, they give a pair of shoes to a child.  That is a company we should all want to support by spending our hard earned money with them!

This is your chance mom…teach your children about other children less fortunate than them with a very hands-on practical lesson and go ONE DAY WITHOUT SHOES!
